Unity Run, 2015 organised by RIST: Shri Sarat Barkotoky, Education Minister of Assam, inaugurated the Unity Run held as a part of Esplendidez, 2015, organised by the 8th Semester students of RIST. About 300 members participated in the run which started from Dispur to Six Mile in Guwahati.
Esplendidez, 2015, The Annual Mega Techno Cultural Event at RIST The 3 day Techno-fest was full of colorful show, technical & scientific competitions in the National Science Day on 28th February. The events included Octaves-the Rock Show, Build O- Mania, Quiz, Singing and Debaing Competitions, Blind Date Show etc. The Model Exhibition was inaugurated by Dr. Mehmoodur Rahman, former VC, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), who appreciated the talents of the students. Dr. Kulendu Pathak, former VC of Dibrugarh University was the expert to judge the exhibition .The creative ideas and innovative thoughts generate a new hope and aspirations to the artists. The last day of Esplendidez, 2015 was a huge success with participations from final round of competitions. Almost all the students, faculty staff thronged the cultural night with a fabulous fashion show.
Forest Range Officers (FROs) training at RIST 39 Forest Range officers of Central Academy for State Forest Service, Assam, underwent a training programme on Microsoft office 2007 at RIST. The training was conducted by the faculties of Computer Science and Engineering Department, RIST. The training session continued for 14 days starting from 14th March 2015 to 27th March 2015.
Creative Wall Magazine: Students of 4th semester ECE, RIST added innovation to their knowledge in order to bring forth the best wall magazines of RIST. The programme was graced by Dr PG Rao, Vice -Chancellor of USTM and professional of Merchant Marketing Group, UK, Sayeed Alam Choudhury. On the occasion, VC of USTM gave his thought provoking suggestions to faculty and instructions to students for future development of the department. The Programme was concluded with encouraging words followed by vote of thanks by Mr A.H. Barbhuiya, Registrar, RIST.
Workshop on Fuzzy Logic: A one day Workshop on Foundation of Fuzzy Set and Fuzzy Logic was held at RIST on February 7, 2015 in collaboration with NIT Silchar and USTM. The objective of the workshop was to give an idea of real life application and to develop a basic idea of Fuzzy Sets and application of Fuzzy Logic in the computational domain. Dr. Ashok Deshpande, Founding Chair, Berkeley Initiative in Soft Computing (BISC) - Special interest Group (SIG) - Environment Management Systems (EMS) was the chief speaker of the workshop. Dr. Deshpande holds a Ph. D. degree in Engineering and Technology and was Deputy Director, National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) /CSIR. He is a Visiting Professor in Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai and Adjunct Professor in College of Engineering, University of Pune. He has over 4 decades of experience in R&D and has to his credit over 120 publications in Journals of international repute. The workshop was attended by 15 participants from RIST and USTM and 10 from other institutions.
GATE - 2015: The GATE 2015 examination has been conducted at the campus of RIST on 31st January and 8th February, 2105 in presence of Dr. Sushanta Karmakar, IIT (G), Dr. Tony Jacob, Prof. B. K Patil and others.
Junior College Principals' Meet (JCPM) 2015: Principals's Meet (JCPM) was successfully organized by Regional Institute of Science and Technology (RIST) in association with University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) on 5th January, 2015. More than one hundred Principals of various Junior Colleges and Higher Secondary Schools from all over North Eastern region have participated in the daylong event. Dr. Kulendu Pathak, Former Vice Chancellor of Dibrugarh University was the Chief Guest of the event. The Meet was presided over by Dr. P.G. Rao, Honourable Vice Chancellor of USTM. Dr PC Mahanta, Director, RIST, Dr Alaka Desai Sarma, Dean, USTM along with a host of other distinguished and eminent educationist was also present on the occasion. JCPM is an effort of ERD Foundation, Guwahati, to throw light on the various problems and to come up with solutions faced by the Colleges and Higher Secondary Schools. The theme of this years Meet was Infrastructure Development and Image Building of Junior Colleges in the NE Region. Eminent Educationist, Dr. Gayatri Goswami, Dr. Farhana Perveen, Dr. Dinesh Baishya and few others have offered their valuable suggestions on various burning problems and solutions thereof.

Awareness Rally on Road Safety : On the occasion of ï¿ Road Safety Week 2014 on 17th January, 2014, the students of RIST and USTM took out a rally from Jorabat to Byrnihat in association with Meghalaya Police of Ri-bhoi District to spread awareness among public on Road safety as the area is more accident prone. Later in the community hall of Byrnihat, Mr. Souvik Dey, a 4th semester student of Civil Engineering of RIST made a very good presentation on Road Safety Awareness in front of a huge local gathering & high police officials of Byrnihat.
The North East Graduate Congress-2014 was successfully organized by RIST on 22nd & 23rd February, 2014 sponsored by State Bank of India. More than three thousand students from North Eastern States participated in the two day long programme and took part in various events exchanging views and ideas, mixing with each other, virtually making the Congress a melting pot of all North Eastern States. His Excellency Shri J. B. Patnaik, honourable Governor of Assam inaugurated the event. The event was marked by debates, quiz, extempore speech, write up and model exhibition competitions for which attractive prizes of lap tops, i-Pads and Mobile phones were distributed to the winners. The highlight of the event was a Panel Discussion on Politics, Corruption and Youth Leadership attended by many Political leaders and Bureaucrats that evoked huge interest of the participating students.
Junior College Principals Meet (JCPM)-2014 USTM in association with RIST organized an unique meet of Principals of Junior Colleges of North East on May 3, 2014 in the Techno city Campus where almost 60 Principals and senior teachers from various Junior colleges of Assam and Meghalaya participated. The theme of the meet was Career Counseling and IT Enabled Teaching Learning. Junior colleges from remote corners of Assam like Tezpur, Kalgachia, Nalbari, Hailakandi, Badarpur, Narayanpur, Barpeta, Bijni, Titabor, Jorhat, Udalguri, Hajo, Kamalpur, Tinsukia and Shillong had participated in this meet. The participants have stated that they have been benefitted by the various Technical sessions and such an initiative will help them guide their students better in a situation where all the importance from government goes to the degree colleges of the locality rather than the junior colleges.
ERDF Mission Award-2014 : The First ERDF Mission awards were bestowed upon three employees in recognition of their excellent services rendered to ERD Foundation as founder Trustees. The Award consisting of a memento and cash of Rs. 50000 each was given to Balen Haloi, the first office bearer of ERDF, Ms. Anju Hazarika, Director, Welfare of ERDF and Mr. Azmol Hussain Barbhuiya, Registrar of Regional Institute of Science and Technology. The awards were handed over by Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, honourable former President of India in the valedictory session of NCPC-2014 on 23rd July, 2014.
North East College Principals' Conclave (NCPC)-2014 This conclave was organized by USTM in association with Assam College Principals Council (ACPC) and Regional Institute of Science & Technology, supported by State Bank of India on 23rd July, 2014 with an aim to streamline the education institutions, knowing each others potentials & working together to create a healthy and conducive environment for the promotion of educational scenario of the region. The highlight of the conclave was a Seminar on Higher Education in North East with reference to Rashtriya Uchchatar Siksha Abhiyan (RUSA). Eminent Scientist and honourable former President of India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam had graced the valedictory session of the conclave and addressed the College principals as well as the school students of the vicinity with his valuable words. Dr. Kalam urged the Principals to emphasize on Science & Innovation to be cultured in educational institutions for the greater benefit of the students of the region as well as the country which will be a step towards Technological advancement to make India a developed country. He also mentioned that the North eastern region is full of vibrant potentials and this is the high time to explore them. The function was also graced by Dr. Mihir Kanti Chaudhury, VC of Tezpur University and Dr. Mridul Hazarika, VC of Gauhati University. Shri R. S. Mooshahary, Former Governor of Meghalaya had inaugurated the conclave. More than five hundred college principals of all the Degree Colleges of Assam as well as the other NE states, teachers and renowned academicians of the region as well as a large number of students attended the function.
Director, IIT Guwahati visited RIST :Prof. (Dr) Gautam Biswas, Director, IIT- Guwahati have visited the campus on 2nd August, 2014. During an interaction with the students, Prof Biswas said all over the world higher education is rapidly changing; I want the students to see the societal needs as they will work for the society one day. We today need to brainstorm the strategies of learning of higher education at University level. Humanities and interdisciplinary subjects like biodiversity, zoology, anthropology, pharmacology, unique hydrology etc should be introduced as subjects for societal information in higher education. Instead of becoming greedy as jobseekers, students must act as an innovator, social scientist and entrepreneur. They must be more focused on innovation and research rather than concentrating on their own career so that they can ultimately contribute for the cause of the nation to make India one of the leading developed countries. He made a presentation titled Changes in Higher Education: An Introduction of Research to Meet up Societal Need. After the interaction Prof Biswas visited different departments and academic Blocks of the University and also interacted with the faculty members. He took keen interest in the activities and research initiatives undertaken by the department of Biological Sciences. He was happy to see the Library facilities and other infrastructure that is presently being developed in this nascent University.

National Science Day-2013 was observed with day long activities on February 28, 2013. Dr. D. N. Buragohain, the Founder Director of IIT, Guwahati was the Chief Guest of the occasion. Other dignitaries present were Dr. N. K. Chaudhury, Mr. M. Hoque, Dr. R. K. Sharma, Deans of various schools of University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya, faculty members & students. A student of RIST- Mr. Kaushalendra Singh was felicitated on the same function for his innovative effort in developing Teleportation Theory.
The North East Teachers Congress (NETC) first of its kind in NE India, followed by a national seminar on Indian Higher Education in the 21st century: Constraints & Possibilities was organized by ERDF on 22nd & 23rd March 2013 with an aim to give the College Teachers a platform to discuss various issues, problems and prospects in the context of emerging educational environment in the country. Apart from the seminar, the two days meet provided an opportunity to the teaching fraternity of North East India to express their views on the changing trends of higher education in the various interactive technical sessions and panel discussions. The seminar was graced by Prof. Umesh Ch. Sarma, Vice Chancellor of Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences as Chief Guest. Dignitaries who addressed the gathering were Prof. Sai Prakash & Prof. Ratan Tookey from Osmania University, Dr. N. K. Chaudhury, Dr. Kulendu Pathak, Dr. P.G. Rao, Dr. L. Sahu, Dr. Ashwini Baruah, Prof. Mrinal Kumar Das, Dr. U. C. Kalita, Dr. U. R. Dhar, Dr. Balendra Kr. Das and Prof. P. J. Das.
National Technology Day-2013 RIST invited Dr. G. Thyagarajan, an international scientist of repute and former Director of CSIR Laboratory as the Chief Guest on the occasion of National Technology Day on 11th May, 2013. He enlightened the gathering with his insightful deliberation on Science & Technology policies of India
World Environment Day-2013 RIST organized an Awareness Rally and Sapling Plantation drive on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5, 2013. Around 250 students with colourful placards and slogans participated in the programme where saplings were planted in 9th mile area and inside the Techno City campus. On the same occasion, Prof. Chandan Mahanta, Deptt. of Civil Engineering, IIT Guwahati and Prof. H. P. Sarma, HOD, Deptt. of Environmental Science, Gauhati University delivered talks & interacted with the students.
Felicitation of MBOSE & ICSE Toppers : Over 80 toppers of High School and Higher Secondary School examinations conducted by the Meghalaya Board of Secondary Education (MBOSE) and eight toppers of ICSE examination from the State of Meghalaya were felicitated by ERD Foundation and RIST at Anton Hall, Don Bosco Square in Shillong on 9th July, 2013. Dr DD Lapang, Former Chief Minister, Meghalaya; Dr Don Kupar Roy, Former Chief Minister, Meghalaya; Dr MA Lyngdoh, Minister of Science & Technology, Urban Affairs; Shri Manas Chaudhuri, Former Education Minister; Prof V Shukla, Vice Chancellor, NEHU & Prof P Myrboh, Pro-Vice Chancellor, NEHU were present on the occasion beside other high level officials, intellectuals, students & Media Person.
Panel Discussion at Arunachal Pradesh : RIST in association with Directorate of Higher and Technical Education, Arunachal has organized a panel discussion on the theme Higher Education in Arunachal Pradesh: Problems and Prospects at Itanagar on 29th July, 2013. The programme was graced by Prof. Tamo Mibang, Vice Chancellor, RGU, Dr. Joram Begi, Director, Higher and Technical Education, AP besides several other dignitaries from the state. Speaking on the occasion Dr Joram Begi said Government alone cannot accomplish such gigantic task, it is the private institution that plays a major role in implementing the work of the government appreciating USTM for organizing such discussion, which will create greater awareness among the stake-holders to address the challenges in the higher education in the state. Hundreds of students from various schools of Itanagar including Directors, Principals of various educational institutions and government officials attended the programme.
Orientation Programme-2013: The orientation programme for the newly admitted students at RIST for the academic year 2013-14 was held on 1st of August 2013 and saw various dignitaries welcoming the freshers. With a bulk of new entrants this year,the programme was the largest orientation day in the history of RIST. Ceremony was attented by parents, guardians and teachers.
The chief guest of the orientetion program was the Retd. Principal of Jorhat Engineering College and former Director of Technical Education, Govt. of Assam Prof Utpal Miri. The other dignitaries that graced the function were Prof. N.K.Chaudhury principal advisor ERDF, Former VC, GU & M. Hoque, Chairman, ERDF, Mr. Sandipan Nair - DGM (Marketing), Dalmia Cement, Prof. P.K.Abdul Azis, - VC, USTM, Shri N.I. laskar - Director Corporate Communication, ERDF, Shri Sashi Bawa - GM, NEEPCO Ltd. Guwahati.
RIST welcomed its new batch with freshman social programme which was followed by an interactive session between the chairman and the freshers. The orientation program concluded with the hope that the new entrants will bring glory and laurel to the college.
Seminar on Interest Free Banking : RIST organized a Seminar on Interest free banking on 17th August, 2013 where the key note was addressed by Dr Shariq Nisar, Director (Research & Operations), Taqwa Advisory and Sharia Investment Solutions Pvt Ltd. Dr Nisar, who is also a visiting faculty of Islamic Finance at AMU, Aligarh; BSAR University, Chennai; and BSE Institute, interacted with the students, scholars, faculties and members of USTM, Gauhati University, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Planning Commission of Assam and other renowned bodies and institutes based in the region. He is among the senior most professionals of Islamic Finance in India and is closely associated with both the academia as well as the industry and has been offered a one year fellowship by the Harvard University USA to do research on Indian financial regulations. According to Dr Nisar, Islamic Finance is a trillion dollar plus industry today and is emerging as one of the fastest growing areas of international finance.
Remembering the JAJABOR: RISTians celebrated sudhakantha Dr.Bhupen Hazarikas second death anniversary. The hostel boys organized the program on 5th November at 6:15 in the evening. It was about two hours program in which some wonderful songs of Bhupen Hazarika were performed. Banajit Barman hosted the entire program and Chinmoy Das along with Bibhuti Sarmah spok and remembered the valuable work of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika in the field of literature, music, theatre and films. The program concluded with the songAsom amar rupohi.
NEFTI Football Tournament North East Forum for Technical Institutions(NEFTI) organised a football tournament at NITS Mirza. Our students showed their strength and support by cheering for the college and attending the event in great numbers. RIST team played against Down Town University and won by 3-2 goals. The football match raised the adrenaline of all the spectators and it was a great break for the students as they got the opportunity to show their sporting skills.
Engineers Day Celebrated: RISTians commemorated the birth anniversary of Dr. Visheshwaria on 15th Sept. The celebration started with the welcome address by Dr. U.K. Sarma (HOD. EEE) and a speech on this occasion by Prof. P. K. Abdul Aziz , VC, USTM. Both the speakers spoke at great length on the valuable contributions of this great Engineer of this nation. On this occasion. an inter branch 'Wall Magazine' competetion was held where students showcased their innovative and interesting ideas in the form of models and addressed the step by step phenomenal growth of science & technology. The day concluded on a high note as the students were awarded for their amazing presentations in the competition. CSE 5th sem took away the 1st prize for their work on 'Pezio Electricity', CE 3rd sem & CSE 5th sem were jointly awarded the 2nd prize for their presentation on development of Civil Engg. named 'Civilization' and 'Sixth Sense' respectively. The 3rd position went to ECE 3rd sem for their model presentation.
Visit of Prof. David Reid Syiemlieh : Prof. David R. Syiemlieh Member, Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) have visited the RIST campus on 27th Sept,13 and interacted with the students to inspire them to take civil services as their career. Prof Syiemlieh, also a renowned academician is the former Vice Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University, Arunachal Pradesh. He had also served as Lecturer at St. Edmund's College, Shillong & as a Professor at NEHU. He has authored and edited several books and publications and had been awarded Senior Fulbright Fellowship in the year 1999. Speaking to a group of more than 200 students from various departments of USTM, Prof. Syiemlieh said Cracking an UPSC examination is not a Herculean task, one just need to be focused in his life and plan their moves properly. Former honorary director of ICSSR-NERC, Prof Syiemlieh, elaborated the group of students and faculties about various aspects of UPSC including its history, mandates, functions, recruitment procedures etc.
Freshers Social: The freshers social program was held on 1st Oct. 2013. The program started with the General Meeting attended by the Chief Guest Prof. Utpal Miri, Retd. Principal of Jorhat Engineering College and Former Director of Technical Education, Govt. of Assam, Dr.P.C. Mahanta, Director RIST, Faculties and Students. The meeting was followed by Mr & Miss RIST competition where Debahuit and Tobibur were declared Mr. & Miss. RIST respectively. Later, the students enjoyed the cultural programs which also included a scintillating performance by well known Assamese singer Rudra Sagar.
An interactive session with TCS iON: A guest lecture session was held on 24th of October 2013 at RIST. National Operation Manager, Mr. Tarun Kumar Nehra, ioN Project visited RIST and addressed the students of Computer Science and Electronics department. The session started with the address by Mr.Nehra and the whole session was very informative which was followed by an interactive session between the students and the guest where they were made aware of the current expectations of the employers & requirement of the industries. A certificate of Spirit of Partnership was given by TCS iON to RIST in recognition of outstanding achivments in making the CWE, GATE & LIC online assessment an enormous and resounding success.
Workshop on ESDM: RIST organized a day long workshop on Electronics System Design & Manufacturing (ESDM), sponsored by Computer Society of India on 2nd November 2013 in its campus in Techno City, 9th Mile, Meghalaya. The workshop was attended by 5th and 7th semester students of ECE ,CSE and EEE Departments of the institute.
Col. Prashant Mathur, Circle Business Head (all 7 states of North East) for VION Network Ltd.; conducted the first session of the workshop on the topic: "Importance of Network in Telecom Industry" as well as scope for electronic and computer engineers in the Telecom Industry. Urging the students to develop the qualities required by the industries, he advised them to make regular visits to the industries so that they have a good relation with them by the time they reach their final semesters. Col. Mathur has 27 years of experience in the Army and the Telecom Industry. He completed his M.Tech (Simulation) from University of Pune and MBA (HR & Marketing) from IIT-Kharagpur.
The second session was conducted by D. Ranganadham, Deputy Director General of Doordarshan and AIR. His elaborate explanations about the satellite communications made it clear to the students how satellite communications overcome the barriers of limited communications.
The workshop started with the welcome address by Mr Somarjit Talukdar, Director-Training and Placement, RIST.

A seminar on Human Rights was organized on 12th February, 2012 at RIST where Dr. Justice Aftab Hussain Saikia, Chairperson, Assam Human Rights Commission & Former Chief Justice, J & K was the Chief Guest.
ERDF signed a MoU with CSIR North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), Jorhat on February 24th, 2012. One of the main objectives of the MoU is to motivate the upcoming science students, technocrats, research scholars & faculties to contribute towards research & innovative works for the scientific & technological development.
A MoU between CSIR- Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), New Delhi and the University of Science and Technology-Meghalaya (USTM) an unit of ERD Foundation has been signed on 3rd May, 2012 for promoting research, development and innovation in the region in the areas of roads and bridges, traffic & transportation, ground improvement and geotechnical engineering, rural roads, pavements design, environment and road safety. This memorandum of understanding has been signed with the objective to establish functional coordination between CRRI and ERDF where students of engineering and technology will be immensely benefitted
North East Graduate Congress An unique 2 days event named North East Graduate Congress was organized by the foundation on 29th & 30th May, 2012 with an aim to enhance all-round development and to bring out capabilities of the future graduates through various life skill sessions which is the first of its kind in the country where senior officials, renowned academicians & stakeholders from industries participated as speakers including the Governor of Assam as the Chief Guest in the valedictory function. Almost 500 students from different colleges of the North Eastern states participated in the event, the foundation arranged their accommodation & fooding for both the days. The concept has been started this year and every year this will be organized by the foundation as a regular event to groom the future generation.
Educational rehabilitation of strife-affected students of BTAD Organised a discussion conclave on Educational rehabilitation of strife-affected students of BTAD where over 100 heads of leading educational groups, representatives of NGOs, social workers and activists, corporate heads, opinion leaders and philanthropists from across the country attended on 8th September, 2012.

Environment Degradation and its sustainability: The ERD Foundation organised a scientific talk on Environment Degradation and its sustainability at the Regional Institute of Science & Technology in the outskirts of the city on 11th Febrauary, 2011. The talk was delivered by Prof Dr Ajit Varma, Director General, Amity Institute of Microbial Technology, Amity University, Noida, U.P. Faculty members of all educational institutions run by ERDF took part in the programme.
Orientation programme for the 3rd batch of Engineering students of Regional Institute of Science & Technology (RIST) was organized from 27th to 30th July, 2011 where His Excellency Shri R.S. Mooshahary, Governor of Meghalaya was the Chief Guest along with other eminent academicians as speakers to motivate & encourage the newcomers.
7th September, 2011 The Science Block of RIST was dedicated as Prof. S.D. Phukan Science Block on 7th September, 2011, his 1st death anniversary. Prof. Phukan was the former Principal JEC, Director, NERIST, Technical Advisor, NEC & finally devoted his last part of life for the promotion of ERDF Institutions.

Pt Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, creator of the Mohan Veena and the winner of several prestigious awards like Sangeet Natak Academy, Star of India, Padmashree award, Honorary Citizenship award of USA and Canada and is amongst the very few Indians to receive the very prestigious Grammy Award in 1994, performed on the occasion and played the Vishwaranjini Raga accompanied by renowned tablist Pt Ram kr Mishra. This event was an attempt to promote the Indian Classical Music amongst the youth.
