USTM announces support for research at Orientation Programme for PhD Scholars

In an exemplary gesture towards development of academic research work in the north-eastern region, the University of Science and Technology (USTM) has declared that every research scholar pursuing PhD in the University would receive Rs 2000 for each of their research papers provided they have originality and published in renowned journals. This was announced by Mahbubul Hoque, the Chancellor of USTM at the PhD orientation programme held on 20 January, 2018 in the University campus which was attended by the PhD Scholars. The PhD Orientation was addressed by Prof Sourabh Basu, Dept. of Physics, IIT Guwahati and Prof. Akhil Ranjan Dutta, Dept. of Political Science, Gauhati University, apart from others.
Addressing the participants, Prof Sourabh Basu said that apart from imparting new knowledge to the world, research scholars have additional responsibility to the society. He said, “All the universities in the North East need to come to one platform for assistance and collaboration for the support of researchers, and USTM can do piloting in this respect”. He said that the PhD students must acquire the skill for technical report writing as they are going to be the skilled manpower in the future.
Speaking to the researchers, Prof Akhil Ranjan Dutta said that the purpose of the researchers is to bring new insight to the domain of knowledge; they should be able to make new contribution to the society through better research.
Prof. Alaka Sarma, Dean, School of Social Sciences and Humanities, USTM also addressed the participants and said that PhD is a very structured programme and the scholars must understand research methodology which guides them how to proceed in their research work step by step. She also said that research work must form an important part of nation building process.
