Manual Therapy for Peripheral Joints is best for any injury: Prof Umasankar Mohanty

9th Mile, Ri Bhoi, September 19, 2018: A three-day long National Workshop on Manual Therapy for Peripheral Joints and Temperomandibular Joint Dysfunction has begun from today at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya and the chief resource person of the workshop has been the internationally acclaimed manual therapy teacher Prof. Umasankar Mohanty, President, Manual Therapy Foundation of India (MTFI). The workshop has been organised by the Department of Physiotherapy, USTM in association with Indian Council of Medical Research, (ICMR); Department of Health Research under Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, New Delhi and MTFI, Mangalore.

Prof. Umasankar Mohanty, who has trained 12,956 physiotherapists across the globe, has inaugurated the Workshop which has seen enthusiastic participation from across the region. Speaking on the occasion, Prof Mohanty said, “Manual physical therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy delivered with the hands as opposed to a device or machine. In manual therapy, practitioners use their hands to put pressure on muscle tissue and manipulate joints in an attempt to decrease back pain caused by muscle spasm, muscle tension, and joint dysfunction.”

This hands-on Workshop has targeted both physiotherapy students and clinicians and will discuss all new trends for the identification and management of peripheral joints and temperomandibular joint dysfunctions. The work presented at this course will be an integration of concepts advocated by James Cyriax, G.D Maitland, Kaltenborn, Mennell, Edwards, Lee, Jull and Richardson and Mohanty. Special emphasis will be given on Clinical Reasoning and Evidence Based Practice. Clinician and students of physiotherapy from different universities of the North East, along with USTM students are participating in the workshop.
