DST summer school on Geospatial Technology concludes at USTM

9th Mile, Ri-Bhoi, Khanapara, 28 July 2019: The 21-day long Summer School on “Capacity Building in Geospatial Technologies and Applications” has successfully come to an end at USTM today where 31 participants from Jammu & Kashmir, West Bengal and the North-eastern states of India have joined. The workshop was organized by the Department of Earth Science, USTM and sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. The Chief Guest of the valedictory session was Prof Devesh Walia, DST Representative from North Eastern Hill University who handed over the certificates to all the participants of the Summer School. A newsletter was also released on the occasion by all the dignitaries present.

Delivering his speech, Prof Devesh Walia said that the North East is a very important location for geo spatial data interpretation. He said that the Government of India will select one student and one coordinator from each of the 18 DST workshops including the one held at USTM, to participate in an international project with an international exposure. “We have chosen USTM as one of the organizers mainly because of the locational significance of the university”, he added. The workshop has targeted researchers, teachers, planners, surveyors and decision makers as the main purpose of the workshop is to support planning and decision making of the government.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Narayan Chetry, Principal Investigator of the project and Head of the Department of Earth Science at USTM thanked all the participants and expressed satisfaction over the positive feedback of the participants. He said that geospatial technology can be targeted for social and community development, geospatial data structure development and locational services. The participants of the summer school are expected to be benefitted in their teaching and learning activities including research by using the modern tools and technology. Earlier,the welcome speech was made by Prof PK Goswami while the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Ajmal H Barbhuiya, Academic Registrar of USTM.
