Director, IIT Guwahati, Dr Gautam Biswas addressed Freshers at RIST

Prof N K Chaudhury, Former Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University congratulated the students saying that RIST is one of the top class engineering institutions which will help them to excel in their lives as the institution has the spirit to serve the country.

Meghalaya, Aug 2nd: The scenario of engineering education is rapidly changing in all over the world and therefore the students should learn about the societal needs to give a final product which will be beneficial for the society. Instead of becoming greedy as jobseekers, students must act as an innovator, social scientist and entrepreneur. They must be more focused on innovation and research rather than concentrating on their own career so that they can ultimately contribute for the cause of the nation to make India one of the leading developed countries This was stated by Prof. Gautam Biswas, Director of IIT Guwahati addressing at the orientation program of the sixth batch of the Regional Institute of Science and Technology (RIST) was held on August 2, 2014. He made a presentation titled “Changes in Higher Education: An Introduction of Research to Meet up Societal Need”. The presentation focused on the necessity of including interdisciplinary subjects like Humanities, Anthropology, Pharmacology, Communication skill, Biodiversity, etc in the curriculum of engineering education. He also urged upon the parents of the students to encourage their wards for higher studies.

The guest of honor Ms L R Sangma, IAS, Chairman MPSC and former commissioner Education department Govt of Meghalaya, welcomed the upcoming engineers and congratulated their parents saying that they have chosen the finest and favorable upcoming institute of Northeast to mould themselves. She further said RIST will give the students a better environment of education because the location. The institute is as such, less disturbed as Northeast is gripped with militancy, ethnic conflicts and problems of the various pressure groups, still the students will feel “home away from home”.

Prof H K Barua, Director, Academic of ERDF, Dr P G Rao, Vice Chancellor of University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM), Dr PC Mahanta, Director RIST and Prof U K Sharma, Executive Director RIST also graced the occasion.

A journal of Electrical Engineering department named ‘SEEED’ was also released on the occasion by the Chief Guest Prof Gautam Biswas.
