August 14, 2018: It was an enlightening day of wisdom and knowledge for the students of University of Science And Technology, Meghalaya, as the Department of English organized an Orientation Programme for the students on 13 August 2018. Professor Rohini Mokashi Punekar , from the department of English , IIT Guwahati addressed the programme as the Chief Guest.
Prof. Punekar shared her experiences as a litterateur and the various scopes and aspects of literature and language in the present day world. She said that just as the species of animals are on a verge of extinction so are several languages on extinction gradually. She spoke of the several North-East Indian dialects to prefer to study linguistic. Students were made familiar with the procedures like documentation of language in literature, translation and various others. She exemplified on the careers like that of linguist and the translators . She emphasized on the importance and relation of language with the tech world. When technology progresses and the human life accommodate itself to suit its technology, the technology has linguistic term and relates to language in the form of ICT (Information and communication technology). She also spoke on the different levels of working of the IITs towards language and literature.
The IITG Prof praised the English Department of USTM for their approaches towards language and literature separately inculcating the love for language and literature within their students. The students of the University were highly benefited through the interaction with such an intellectual. The programme ended with a promise by the department for such motivating programmes in the near future for the students.
