Prof D Saikia exhorts students to contribute for nation building

“Engineers are needed today not only for building the nation but also for wielding the infrastructural gaps that exists at vulnerable regions of the country.”

The orientation programme for the new batches of students of the Regional Institute of Science & Technology (RIST) was held at the USTM administrative complex on the outskirts of Guwahati on Saturday. Addressing the gathering of students and guardians, Professor D Saikia, Director, National Institute of Technology (NIT) Meghalaya, Shillong said, “Engineers are needed today not only for building the nation but also for wielding the infrastructural gaps that exists at vulnerable regions of the country.” He spoke in details about what engineering students to plan for making India a vibrant country were every citizen will live a good quality life.
 

Earlier in his welcome address, Dr PC Mahanta, Director RIST, appealed to the students to have full passion for their studies and on completion of studies, compassion for the community and society at large. Dr PG Rao, Vice Chancellor of University of Science & Technology Meghalaya (USTM) exhorted the new entrants to RIST not only to aspire for becoming a good engineer but also for becoming a good Indian and a good human being. Amit Choudhury, Dean, Management Sciences Department USTM, addressed the students on the importance of communication and life skills.
 

After the conclusion of the first session of the orientation programme, officials of ICICI Bank addressed the students and their guardians about the ‘Campus Card’ that was being given to each new student in a joint bid of the Bank with RIST. This card, besides serving as an ID card, would enable the parents to deposit money in their children’s account while the children could pay their fees and make purchases in the amenity centre in the university complex by using this card.
 

All new students, their guardians, and guests were treated to lunch by RIST management following which Dr HK Barua, Director Academics RIST, supervised the Parents-Management Interaction & Student-Teacher Interaction sessions to apprise the target groups about the rules and regulations for the new entrants to the Institute.
