More than 4 percent of Assam’s population is diabetic: study

November 14, 2017: â€œDiabetes is a silent killer. One person is being killed every 8 second and the killer is diabetes. More than four percent of Assam’s population is diabetic. This amounts to about 13 lakh population being diabetic in Assam”, said Dr Rupam Choudhury, a diabetologist while addressing a function on Tuesday on “Awareness on Diabetes” organized by the Department of Physiotherapy, University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM)here on the occasion of World Diabetes Day.
Based on a Diabetic Prevalence Study done in Assam in 2014, Dr Choudhury said that there is a 3.73 per cent increase of diabetic patients every year and the rate is increasing continuously. Making a presentation on “Diabetes: The Silent Killer”, Dr Choudhury said that 77 percent of the diabetic people are living in low and middle income countries. According to the study, one in every two persons does not know that they have diabetes. Diabetes is actually a disorder of insulin production and its utilization, he added.
Earlier, welcoming the participants, Prof Amarjyoti Choudhury, Vice Chancellor, USTM, said that prevention is better than cure and the need of the hour is that people have to be aware of this killer disease which entirely rests on one’s lifestyle. The function was also addressed Prof RK Sharma, Pro VC, USTM apart from other dignitaries. It was attended by more than a hundred participants.
